Use Art as a Healing Tool

Use Art as a Healing Tool - The Next Time You Visit The Sick by Raymond Horner

Did you know that Art could be a powerful medicine for someone who is ill? It does not matter what type of medium is used. You could use anything from sculpture to collage art to comfort and give hope to someone recovering from an illness. The main thing to remember is when art is used in recovery it does become a new discovery for the patient.

There are four major locations that should be considered. Of course there are more locations that can be added to this list. But the purpose of this article is to plant the seed in your mind to bring more than flowers when you visit someone who is ill.

Rehabilitation Center

Imagine a figurative print of someone playing basketball in the Special Olympics. A patient returning to his or her room after a long painful session in physical therapy could be inspired to keep going.

Hospital

An inspirational landscape print placed in the same area as the name of the nurse on duty could be the sunshine of hope for the day.

Hospice

A well place picture of peaceful nature scenes could bring comfort to not only the patient but also the family who is hurting during this time. Of course some people do come out of hospice care. But for those who do not well selected art can help in the transitional phrase.

Home

The pathway from the sleeping area to the eating area should have hopeful and relaxing artwork. Work that contains goal oriented and purposeful material will encourage the patient to continue to get well in order to achieve his or her dreams.

Regardless of the location each piece of art should be selected to motivate the patient in the recovery process.
